Our Mission

Supporting Sunrise strives to improve the birthing experience for local Black, African-American, Afro-Caribbean & Nubian families. Supporting Sunrise provides financial support for Black and Brown Birth Work students, as a part of a community strategy to increase the availability of culturally grounded care in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.

Our vision

It really does take a village. Having a great birth team makes for a better pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. By providing scholarships to Midwives, Doulas, Birth Assistants and Lactation Consultants, we are creating more birth professionals who will help our community excel. We want every recipient to not only succeed, but to also thrive in this profession. With more Black and Brown Birth Workers serving their communities, it is our goal to not only see a decline in the local maternal health mortality rates, but to also see families birth in the ways that are healthy, joyful and sacred to them.

Our Values

Community

We need to put our words to action. If we are going to make change we must support the Birth Workers who supports the families. We believe in putting the money in the hands of those who are passionate about helping their communities.

Inclusion

Safe, affordable and diverse health care is a human right. For far too long Black birthing families have been left behind due to the erasure of Grand Midwives. We believe Black families deserve providers who look like them. A health care system who listens to them. A health care system that gives them the care they deserve. A system who sees them as human.

legacy

We believe Grand Midwives have been vital to the well-being of maternal and infant health in our community, and it is important for this legacy to continue. We believe that Black Midwives hold the key to ensuring joyful, healthy, and safe experiences for families. We believe in the next generation of Black Midwives.

INTEGRITY

Honesty in action is owning short comings, listening, learning and evolving.

Respect

Each birth is sacred and we must respect the different ways in which a family decides to birth their babies.

Black women have always been and will always be the leaders to address healthcare disparities facing Black women.
